Energy ?ows in buildings
In Chapter 2 we saw that energ},r exchanges affect people and buildings. Externally1 the building envelope is subject to solar gain, radiation exchange with its surroundings and convective heat loss (or gain) owing to the winds that almost oontinuously ?ow past it. Moisture, too, can be lost to the surroundings (and, somewhat differently from the human body, gained as when driving rain penetrates into the external wall}. Intetnally, the building is the site of the activities of the occupants and processes which include lighting, running ofequipment from ventilation fans to photoeopiers, cooking and heating. Man},r 0f the internal loads are appliances that are outside the control ofthe designer. All of the energ},r supplied ?nishes as heat, even when there is
a useful intermediate state such as light or a moving fan. There is now pressure being brought to bear on producers to label the energyr consumption of appliances to enable the eonsumer to make educated choices about lower energy appliances (see Chapter 10). Table 3.2 shows some typical energy consumption ?gures for a variety ofprocesses and the associated C01 production.
