Pharynx and Soft palate Curricular Objectives By the end of this session students are expected to: Theory 1. Describe the shape, parts, and surfaces of the soft palate and the folds extending from it 2. Name the groups of muscles acting on the soft palate and their actions 3. Summarize the motor & sensory supply of the soft palate and its valve like action 4. Appraise the role of levator veli palatini in vagal nerve examination 5. Outline the location, communication and the composition of the pharynx 6. Recall the muscles and fascia forming the pharyngeal wall 7. Review the gaps in the pharyngeal wall and structures passing through 8. Describe the three parts (subdivisions) of the pharynx 9. Appraise the clinical importance of the close relation of the pharynx to skull base 10. Define adenoids and describe their applied anatomy 11. Discuss the location, venous drainage, and lymphatic drainage of the palatine tonsils 12. Outline the clinical importance of peritonsillar space 13. Define the gag reflux and outline its limbs and clinical significance 14. Explain the difference in response to irritation between oropharynx and valleculae 15. Review the piriform fossa & its importance as a possible site of foreign body lodgment 16. Outline the different parts of the Waldeyer’s ring and its clinical importance 17. Describe the retro- and parapharyngeal spaces and their and their extensions Practical 1. Label the bones, cartilages, membranes & ligaments supporting soft palate & pharynx 2. Identify the soft palate and mark its parts and surfaces 3. Name the nerves supplying the muscles and mucosa of the soft palate 4. Follow the Pterygomandibular raphe and label the muscles attached to it 5. Locate the circular muscles of the pharynx noting their pattern of attachment 6. Mark the three parts of the pharynx and acknowledge their communications 7. Recognize major landmarks visible in each of the three parts of pharynx 8. Mark the structures visible within the pharynx in living human 9. State the lymph nodes enlarged in palatine tonsillitis 10. Recall the blood vessel at risk in tonsillectomy operations 11. Name the nerves supplying the muscles and mucosa of different parts of the pharynx 12. Identify the different parts of the Waldeyer’s ring
