Abstract
This study attempts to reveal the
relation between entailment and presupposition. One of the principal difficulties that
one faces when dealing with aspects of language is how to distinguish between entailment and
presupposition. This study aims at identifying the points of
difficulty which Iraqi EFL university student encounter in
using entailment and presupposition, and Finding out the reasons beyond
students’ errors and to put the suitable solution for them. It is hypothesized
that: (1) Most Iraqi EFL university students are unable to differentiate
between entailment and presupposition, (2) the performance of both two groups
are close at the beginning, (3) the achievement of the experimental group is
better than that of the control group. A test has been submitted to third year
students for the academic year (2007-2008), Department of English, College of Education,
University of Babylon.
In
the light of students responses, it can be concluded that: (1) most of them
are unable to differentiate between entailment and presupposition, (2) their
results are close in the first attempt, (3) the achievement of the experimental
group is better than that of the control group, and (4) students errors can be
attributed to the following factors: (a) intralingual transfer, this type of
error constitutes (13.3%1), (b) context of learning, this kind of error
constitutes (61.52%), and (c) communication strategies, this kind of error
constitutes (25.17%).
