World Ancient Architecture Finds in Three Continents Throughout the world, archaeology is revealing ever more of man s buried past. In some areas it is concerned with pre-history; in others it providing a background to historical events. In the Near East excavation adds constantly to our knowledge of the everyday life which lay behind. Wall-paintings, pieces of masonry, carvings in ivory, and metal furnishing dating back to the days of king Solomon, deeping our understanding of temple architecture and decoration at the time of this most famous of all temple-builder. At Byblos north of Tyre, remains of temples more than a thousand years older than that of Solomon have been unearthed. In the site of Jericho the city which fell to the armies of Joshua, the remains of several ruin cities have been explored. One of the strangest of recent finds made their was that of human skulls, thought to be some seven thousand years old, on which features were modelled in plaster and shells inserted into the eye sockets. Were these sculptures trophies of war or were they tributes to ancestors? The answer is not yet known.
