What is Sociology
Sociology is a field of science that studies people, their interactions, and why individuals and societies do the things they do. It is an important area of science because it seeks to understand the very roots of what it is to be human in order to help predict outcomes, help solve conflicts and problems, and to prevent issues from developing in the future. The various fields of sociology all work together to conduct research and aid professionals and organizations in performing their work.
Types
• The various fields of sociology can be broken down into the parts of society that they study. Some sociologists study the interaction between individuals. These sociologists are often social workers or work in counseling or as an aid to counselors. Other sociologists, such as those employed by the census bureau or by urban planers, study how members of a large society are spread out and how various groups in a society may place themselves and interact with each other. Finally, there are the sociologists who study global human interactions. This is how nations deal with each other, and this branch of sociology is often used by nongovernmental organizations and government agencies.
Significance
• Sociology is one of the most important social sciences because it studies human beings and how they react to each other and their environment. This basic premise allows for the implication of findings in sociology to affect both individuals and larger societies. How will a society be affected by a civil war? Sociologists can help people to understand this, which can lead to the prevention of war in the long run. This goes the same for natural disasters, domestic disputes, etc.
History
• People have studied social aspects of human beings since the times of the ancient philosophers, but sociology as a science was not developed until the early 19th century. For the next 75 years or so the framework of sociology was developed and redeveloped into what it is today by a number of famous philosophers and scientists. As time went on, studies in sociology branched off. Today, these sociological theories and fields work together, for the most part, to create the whole of sociology.
Function
• The way that human interactions are studied in sociology is mainly by looking at past and present human situations. Things like war and racial disputes are studied at depth and current human issues are compared to these. By doing this, sociologists can predict the outcome of various human interactions, whether they are among different groups or cultures, or between humans and their environment. There is also a heavy use of statistics and the scientific method in sociological experiments and theorizing.
Considerations
• It s important to understand that although sociology is a science of its own, it works very closely with other scientific fields. For some time, it was undecided whether sociology should be considered a science of its own, or simply new fields of study within other sciences. Some of the branches that work very closely with sociology are psychology, criminology, anthropology, socio-economics and political science.
