Definitions of Sociological Terms

Accommodation: It is the process of adjustment to a conflict situation in which over hostility is avoided.
Adaptation: It is the process whereby an organism adapts to its environment.
Authority: It is the power that is institutionalized .
Deviant Behaviour: It is a behaviour from the norms that are acceptable to a society.
Ethnic Group: It is a group where culture is different in belief, values, and customs so that its members form any group identity.
Elite: It is a majority group within a society, socially acknowledged as superior in some sense.
Ideology: It is a body of ideas that provides a rationalization for a way of life or social system, such as capitalism, socialism etc.
Institution: It is a formal and stable way of pursuing an activity that is important to society.
Kin Group: It is a group of individuals that are not living in a single household but related by common ancestry or origin or by marriage and adoption.
Research Design: It is a plan for collecting and analyzing the data.
Social Control: It is the keeping of order and observation of the norms of the society.
Alienation: It is the feeling of not belonging .
Anomie: It is a split between the social goals and the ability to reach them.
Charisma: It is the personal appeal of an individual.
Collective Behaviour: It is a relatively spontaneous actions of groups of people to relieve feeling of dissatisfaction and anxiety.
Fashion: It is the custom of dress, speech, music, art and other interests which are widely accepted by the elements of a society.
Immigration: It is the process by which individuals or groups enter account with the purpose of establishing a new place of permanent residence.
Totemism: It is a complex of belief organized around a totem which is an object worshiped as both a god or an ancestor.
Tribe: It is a social group consisting of two or more clans living in a common territory, having a common culture and language.
Communication: It is the exchange of the information by means of signals and symbols.
Demography: It is the study of population (its growth , composition, and decline).
Ecology: It is the science of inter-relationships of the living thing to each other and their environments.
Evolution: It is a process of a long term change in which later stages emerge out in earlier stages.
