Prokaryotic Algae

Division: Cyanophyta

Order: Chroococcales

Family: Chroococcaceae

Genus:  Chroococcus

               Gloeocapsa

               Merismopedia

Family: Microcystaceae

               Microcystis

Pigment: Chlorophyll a, Biliprotein (Phycoerythrin &Phycocyanin).

Food reserves: Cyanophycean starch & Cyanophycin protein

Order: Oscillatoriales (Harmogonales)

Family: Oscillatoriaceae

Genus: Oscillatoria

Family: Rivulariaceae

Genus: Rivularia

             Gloeotrichia

Family: Nostocaceae

Genus: Nostoc

             Anabaena

Chroococcus sp. (The cells half circle in shape)

Merismopedia sp

The ellipsoidal cells are arranged in regular rows to form a plate or flat colonies.

Microcystis sp

The spherical  to irregular cells are surrounded by mucilage sheath.

What is “Palmelloid”?

Palmelloid:- The cells remain held together in a mucilaginous matrix.

Oscillatoria sp

·        This genus containing many species, in some of them the cells are broader than long, where as in other the reverse is true.

·        There is no differentiation among the component cells of trichome except the apical cell.

·        Have no mucilage sheath.

Gloeotrichia sp

·        Is taper from basal to apex (hair like).

·        The mucilage sheath envelopes body to end of akinete.

·        The body differentiated into three types of cells :

1.   Basal Heterocyst

2.   Elongated Akinete

3.   Vegetative cell

Rivularia sp.

·        The sheath envelopes whole body

·        Akinetes are lacking

Nostoc sp

·        It is unbranched filamentous

·        The body differentiated in to three types of cells: Heterocyst, Akinete & vegetative cell.

Anabaena sp

·        It is unbranched filamentous

·        The body differentiated in to three types of cells: Heterocyst, Akinete & vegetative cell.

·        Anabaena differ from Nostoc in vegetative cells, are being dram or cylindrical shape. While in Nostoc small spherical.

·        Anabaena & Nostoc use in rice field because of (N2) fixation

Gloeocapsa sp

·        The cell rounded or rounded in poles
