Vertical problems
Vertical problems usually manifest as either an increase or decrease in the incisor overbite. This can range from a small increase or decrease in either direction to an increased and complete overbite, or anterior open bite.
Deep Over Bite
The vertical distance between the upper and the lower incisors, edge in occlusion termed as Over Bite. The normal range is for the maxillary incisors to overlap the mandibular by 2–4 mm vertically, or one-third to one-half of their crown height. Overbite is described as:
• Increased if the maxillary incisors overlap the mandibular incisor crowns vertically by greater than one-half of the lower incisor crown height; and is often, although not always, associated with reduced vertical facial proportions.
An increased overbite is a common feature of class II division 2 malocclusion and its reduction will be necessary to establish a class I incisor relationship. In class II division 2 cases there is often a hypodivergent growth pattern, a reduction in lower face height and a
class II skeletal base relationship (although a class II division 2 incisor relationship can also be found in association with a skeletal class I or even mild III relationship).
