Waste Management
Solid Waste is defined as a material that is cheaper to throw away than to store or use. It is no longer considered as unwanted material to be dumped out of the site. Solid wastes are simply material at wrong place’ which can be segregated, transformed, recycled and reused with great financial and environmental benefits.
IMPACTS OF SOLID WASTES ON ENVIRONMENT
Unless properly managed solid wastes have potential of serious impact on environment, It can lead to surface and ground water contamination, land pollution and air quality deterioration_ Fig. 1 shows the likely sources of impact on air, water and land environment. Water infiltrating through the wastes generates Ieachate, which can ultimately mix with the ground water. Dust and Iitter scattered by wind are responsible for deterioration of air quality in the vicinity of disposal sites. Insanitary method of disposal of wastes also produces odor and affects the aesthetics of the area. Moreover- decomposition of wastes releases noxious gases posing high risk to human health. Some of the environmental and health hazards due to solid wastes are presented in Table 1.1

Waste transformation
Wastes transformation is the physical, chemical or biological conversion of waste for any beneficial purpose, e.g., energy recovery. A number of processes such as composting, anaerobic digestion, incineration, pyrolysis gasification and pellitization are employed for this purpose. Several by products are also produced. selection of a suitable technique depends upon the objectives of waste transformation as well as the composition of wastes.
Volume Reduction. Volume reduction of wastes is carried out before its final disposal. It includes size reduction through shreddins, size separation through screening and volume reduction through compaction. Volume reduction of waste also reduces the land area requirementsfor its landfill disposal.
