اولا المقدمة

• An operating system is a program that acts as an intermediary between a user of a computer and the computer hardware.
• The purpose of an operating system is to provide an environment in which a user can execute programs. The primary goal of an operating system is thus to make the computer system convenient to use
. • A secondary goal is to use the computer hardware in an efficient manner.
• In brief, an operating system is the set of programs that controls a computer. Some examples of operating systems are UNIX, Mach, MS-DOS, MS Windows, Windows/NT,OS/2andMacOS.
• An operating system is an important part of almost every computer system.

1. To develop a description of deadlocks, which prevent sets of concurrent processes from completing their tasks. ?
2. To present a number of different methods for preventing or avoiding deadlocks in a computer system. ?
3. To provide a detailed description of various ways of organizing memory hardware. ?
4. To discuss various memory-management techniques, including paging and segmentation. ?
5. To describe the benefits of a virtual memory system.?• To explain the concepts of demand paging, page-replacement algorithms, and allocation of page frames.?
6. To explain the function of file systems. ?
7. To describe the interfaces to file systems. ?
8. To discuss file-system design tradeoffs, including access methods, file sharing, file locking, and directory structures. ?
