Some Discrete Distributions
There are several named discrete probability distributions that are common enough to
merit special attention. We have used many of these distributions as examples in
previous chapters. Our goal is to classify these common probability distribution
functions. We will then derive general formulas for the mean and variance of random
variables with these distributions. While it is important to learn many of the definitions and properties that follow, we encourage you to also concentrate on the techniques that we use to justify these properties. In particular, we will make extensive use of the methods discussed, particularly sums of random variables and
probability generating functions.
The Discrete Uniform Distribution
The discrete uniform random variable is designed to model experiments such as those
in which there are a finite number of equally likely outcomes. If the sample
space is of size n then we assign the probability 1/n to each of the first n whole numbers.
