Bernoulli Trials and the Binomial Distribution
A Bernoulli trial is an experiment that has two outcomes (for example, true-false; girl-boy; make-miss; on-off; 1-0; success-failure; yes-no). In order to classify all of these situations as a single equivalent probability experiment, we use a generic discrete random variable, X , to represent it. It is traditional to adopt the convention that the value X =1 is associated with success and the value X = 0 is associated with failure. The assignment of the words success and failure to the two possible outcomes of the experiment is completely arbitrary.
