Exp.1 Determination the rate reaction constant and half-life of hydrolysis Ethyl acetate .
Theory: The rate of reaction can be defined as the change in the concentration of any one of the reactants or products per unit time. The order of reaction is the number of moles whose concentrations determine the rate of a reaction at a given temperature. The molecularity of a reaction is defined as the number of molecules or ions that participate in the rate reaction determining step. The half life of reaction is the time required to reduce the half concentration of reactant substance. The types of chemical reaction include: 1. Zero order reaction. 2. First order reaction. 3. Second order reaction. 4. Third order reaction. The hydrolysis ethyl acetate in acidic medium as follows reaction:
CH_3 ?COOCH_2 CH?_3+H_2 O._( ???)^( H^+ ) ? CH?_3 COOH+CH_3 CH_2 OH
According to the above equation, this reaction is one of the second order reaction, but through reaction the water concentration remains constant, so the rate of the reaction doesn t depend on the concentration of the water, the change is happening in the concentration of ethyl acetate only, therefore, this reaction from pseudo first order reaction. To increase the rate of reaction are using an acid as catalyst, the concentration of catalyst remains constant during the reaction that does not affect on reaction order. According to first order reaction:
