MUSCLE TISSUE
There are three types: skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle. All muscle cells consist of elongated cells called muscle fibers (myocytes). Each muscle fiber contains numerous myofibrils, which contain two types of contractile protein filaments, actin and myosin.
The major function of the muscle tissue is to produce motion. Externally this is seen as movement of limbs, internally as the beat of the heart, intestinal peristalsis and other motions.
