Abdomen Session 8 Lecture: supracolic organs: Liver, Biliary tree, and Spleen

Curricular Objectives: By the end of this session students are expected to:

Theory
1. Describe the gross anatomy of liver and the ligaments attached to it
2. Outline the blood supply & venous drainage of liver including fetal circulation
3. Underline the importance of the bare area
4. Discuss the importance of surface markings of the liver in its examination and disease
5. Discuss the location, boundaries of the sub-hepatic and sub-phrenic spaces
6. Summarize the formation and course of the ducts forming the biliary system
7. Underline the location, parts, relations and blood supply of the gall bladder
8. Describe the boundaries & content of cysto-hepatic triangle
9. Define the terms, Hepatopancreatic ampulla, Sphincter of Oddi, Major duodenal papilla
10. Acknowledge the possible effects of blockage at different parts of bile system
11. Discuss the boundaries & communications of the spaces within supracolic compartment
12. Describe the relation of the lesser sac to the other supracolic spaces
13. Predict space at which fluids and gases may collect if leaked from a viscus
14. Underline the location, gross features and relations of the spleen
15. Summarize the attachment and content of the ligaments of spleen
16. Outline the blood supply of the spleen
17. Discuss the effect of the location & structure of spleen on the outcomes of blunt trauma

Practical
1. Identify the four lobes of liver and classify them into anatomical and functional
2. Distinguish the inferior border of the liver and its surface markings
3. Trace the ligaments attached to the surfaces of the liver and their content
4. Follow the different components of the extrahepatic part of the biliary tree
5. Identify the different parts of the gall bladder and its surface markings
6. Locate the cysto-hepatic triangle and list its content
7. Label the subphrenic and subhepatic spaces and acknowledge their communications
8. Distinguish the spleen, its gross features, and its blood vessels and important relations
