Isolation and Puri?cation of an Organic and Bio-organic Compounds
Introduction : IN this experement you will: 1-Identify the best solvent to use in the isolation of a compound. 2-Study the effect of solvent quantity on the isolation of a compound. 2- Gain experience in purifying an organic compound by the technique of recrystallization.
Any Organic compound isolated from their natural sources or prepared synthetically in the laboratory are usually impure ( m.p :not sharp).the inpurities may be product of side reaction , traces of starting material or a dust or sand from air.Pure substances are not only important to chemists in their studies of matter but also are vital in other areas of study such as medicine where those substances might be used as medications. therefore to make your molecule or compound pure you should do (Recrystallization ) which is based on the fact that the solubility of an organic compound in a speci?c solvent will increase signi?cantly as the solvent is heated. When an impure organic solid is dissolved in such a heated solvent and then the solution is cooled to room temperature or below, the solid will usually recrystallize from solution in a pure form. This allows the solid to be isolated in a pure form if the impurities in the solid either fail to dissolve at the elevated temperature or remain dissolved when the solution is cooled.
