Nutrition assessment

Is the evaluation of nutritional status ( the health condition 0f individual us influence by food consumption & utilization of nutrient , so evaluation of nut. Status is the 1st step in the development of satisfactory plane for nut. care of individual. It can also provide valuable clinical assessment in treatment of acute disease& provide basis for prevention of chronic disease later in life. Complete nut . Assessement include - clinical evaluation (history , physical examination ) - laboratory assessment( biochemical tests ) - dietary evaluation - anthropometric measures. history - e.g. : -teeth painful , missing teeth - mastication , swallowing - appetite , food avoidance or preference - history of Wt. loss or Wt. gain . physical assessment Observation of an individual may offer a gross assessment of nutritional status . ** physical appearance : e.g. pallor , emaciation , & hair changes ( indicate long term energy deficit ) ** edema : may be present following protein depletion ** pressure sore or poor wound healing : may be the result of immune response abnormalities or under nutrition ** breathlessness : may be result of anemia ** mobility : may be decrease following reduce in muscle mass due to immobilization which may present difficulties in food purchasing & preparation .
** mood , e.g. apathy and depression , may be present in patients with eating disorders and other causes of undernutrition Biochemical and hematological assessment Various parameters of nutritional status can be measured by analysis of serum , plasma , whole blood , urine & feces . * vitamin and mineral status : may be assessed by circulating levels although deficiency of some micronutrients must be prolonged before blood levels are affected . For other micronutrients the body is finally balanced and a dietary deficiency is balanced by Increase mobilization from tissues , e.g. phosphate , or reduce excretion . * protein status : may be reflected by serum proteins such as albumine * iron stste : reflected by Hb , serum iron , PCV * Iodine : reflected by urinary iodine , TFT. Dietary evaluation : 1- 24 hours recall 2- food frequency questioner ( frequency of intake of particular food ) 3- dietary history ( past & resent diet history) 4- dietary record 5- observation of food intake 6- house hold food consumption Anthropometry : It means the measurement of : height & weight , skin fold thicknesses , circumferences ( head , chest circumference., mid arm circumferences ) :
