Two main parts:

Central NS (brain and spinal cord)

Peripheral nervous system (cranial and spinal nerves and their associated ganglia).

Functional divisions

Somatic NS (controls voluntary activities)

Autonomic NS (controls involuntary activities)


Nerve cells (neurons), supported by neuroglia

What is a Neuron?

Types of processes: dendrites and axon.

Dendrites are short processes
Axon is the longest process

Site where two neurons come into close proximity but not into Anatomic continuity
The gap is bridged by a neurotransmitter substance

Origin (root values) from the spinal cord
Motor, sensory, mixed or autonomic
Structures or region it supplies (innervates)
Where it is vulnerable to injury
Where it may be palpable, anaesthetized, etc. in a living person
