Esophagus, Stomach and Duodenum (E.S.D.)
Curricular Objectives: By the end of this session students are expected to:

Theory
1. Recall the compartments within the abdominal cavity
2. Define the foregut and list the abdominal viscera derived from it
3. Discuss the arrangement and function of the esophageal hiatus
4. Underline the location, structure and function of the gastroesophageal junction
5. Describe the abdominal part of the esophagus, parts of stomach and duodenum
6. Compare the gross appearance of the mucosa in esophagus, stomach and duodenum
7. Outline the locations of Esophagus, stomach and duodenum within abdominal cavity
8. Review the attachment and content of peritoneal folds related to the E.S.D
9. Underline the boundaries of the lesser sac and its relation to pancreas
10. Discuss the blood supply and venous drainage of the foregut parts (E.S.D.)
11. Review the nerve supply of the foregut describing the course of the vagus nerve
12. Recall the characteristics of pain arising from the foregut

Practical
1. Recall the vertebral level of the esophageal hiatus and the structures passing through it
2. Trace the abdominal esophagus to the gastroesophageal junction
3. Recognize the foregut parts of the gut tube
4. Label the parts, surfaces and borders of the Esophagus, Stomach, and Duodenum
5. Identify Esophagus, Stomach, and Duodenum in a barium enhanced x-ray
6. Discriminate between esophagus, stomach, and duodenum in OGD image
7. Trace the lesser omentum and list the content of its free border
8. Follow the attachment of different parts of greater omentum and recall its function
9. Locate the lesser sac and its foramen of communication with the greater sac
10. Trace the arteries supplying the foregut
11. Follow the foregut course of the vagus nerve and list its major branches
