Oral Mucosa
•Lining of oral cavity has a stratified squamous epithelium
•Layer of slightly keratinized cells covers only regions exposed to severe abrasion (gums, hard palate, dorsal tongue)

•Lining of cheeks, lips, and inferior surface of tongue is relatively thin, nonkeratinized, and delicate
Oral or buccalcavity
•Formed by cheeks, hard and sot palates, and tongue
•Vestibulae: between lower lip &gum.
•Oral cavity proper is a space that extends from gums and teeth to fauces(opening between oral cavity and oropharynx)
•Salivary glands release saliva
Pharynx
•Passes from mouth into pharynx
•3 parts
-Nasopharynx:-
located superior and posterior to the soft palate.
-contains the PHARYNGEAL TONSILS and TUBAL TONSILS
•Functions only in respiration
–Oropharynx
•Digestive and respiratory functions
–Laryngopharynx•Functions of the tongue
•Mechanical processingby compression, abrasion, and distortion
•Manipulationto assist in chewing and to prepare material for swallowing
•Sensory analysisby touch, temperature, and taste receptors
•Secretion of mucinsand the enzyme lingual lipase
•Digestive and respiratory functions
