Right and left Vagus Nerves ? Behind the root of the right and left lungs ? Through esophageal opening of the diaphragm ? Right vagus behind the esophagus ? Left vagus in front of the esophagus 2. Right and left Phrenic Nerves ? In front of the root of the right and left lungs ? Right phrenic run with IVC through caval opening of diaphragm ? Left phrenic pierce the diaphragm 3. Thoracic Part of the Sympathetic Trunk ? Along the sides of thoracic vertebral bodies 4. Esophagus ? Behind the left atrium ? In front of descending thoracic aorta 5. Thymus ? Bilobed gland Part II: Surface anatomy of the chest wall Objectives: By the end of this lab students are expected to be able to identify the following structures on the surface of the chest wall: A- Anterior chest wall: ? Surface landmarks 1. Clavicle and its Medial ends 2. Suprasternal notch (T2) 3. Sternal angle (T4-T5) 4. 2nd costal cartilage 5. Costal cartilages and ribs 6. 12th rib 7. xiphisternal joint 8. costal margin 9. Nipple (ICS4) 10. Apex Beat of the Heart (ICS5) B- Posterior chest wall: 1. Superior angle of Scapula (T2) 2. Heart valves: 1. Aortic valve (right ICS2/medial end ) 2. Pulmonary valve (left ICS2/medial end ) 3. Mitral valve (ICS5/apex beat) 4. Tricuspid valve (body of sternum/lower end) Part III: Radiographic anatomy of the chest Objectives: By the end of this lab students are expected to be able to identify the following structures when given a chest X ray film: 1. Clavicle 2. Thoracic vertebrae 3. Ribs (should be able to count them) 4. Scapulae and their Medial borders 5. Diaphragm 6. Costophrenic angles 7. Trachea 8. Right and left lungs 9. Cardiophrenic angles 10. Right border of the heart (right atrium) 11. Left border of the heart (left ventricle) 12. Arch of the aorta (going backward and to the left)
