Esophagus, Stomach and Duodenum (E.S.D.)
Curricular Objectives
By the end of this session students are expected to:
Practical
1. Trace the esophagus to the gastroesophageal junction
2. Compare the location of gastroesophageal junction and the esophageal hiatus
3. Identify the E.S.D. in models, cadavers and barium meal x-ray
4. Identify various parts, surfaces, borders, and the mucosa of the stomach
5. Distinguish the lesser omentum and trace its attachment
6. Follow the attachment of greater omentum and distinguish its different parts
7. Locate the lesser sac and its foramen of communication with the greater sac
8. Recognize the foregut part of the duodenum
9. Trace the arteries supplying the E.S.D.
10. Follow the vagus nerve along its course near to E.S.D.

Theory
1. Recall the compartments within the abdominal cavity
2. Define the foregut and list the abdominal viscera derived from it
3. Describe the abdominal part of the esophagus and the omenta related to it
4. Summarize the location and function of the gastroesophageal junction
5. Outline the main parts of the stomach describe its location within the abdominal cavity
6. Discuss the blood supply and venous drainage of the E.S.D.
7. Underline the effect of blockage to the veins draining the lower part of esophagus
