Scalp, Temporal fossa & Infratemporal fossa Curricular Objectives By the end of this session students are expected to: Theory 1. Define the scalp, its extensions, and its overlap with the face 2. List the layers of scalp and describe them 3. Describe the attachment of the occipitofrontalis muscle and its aponeurosis 4. Outline the sensory supply of scalp 5. Summarize the blood supply of the scalp 6. Uncover the anatomical difference between superficial and deep cuts of scalp 7. Discuss the anatomy of the three main types of scalp hematoma 8. Appraise the role of emissary veins in the spread of scalp infection 9. List the boundaries and content of the temporal fossa 10. Review the boundaries and list the content of the infratemporal fossa 11. Acknowledge the communications of the infratemporal fossa to nearby spaces 12. Outline the course and major branches of maxillary artery 13. Outline the course and major branches of the mandibular nerve 14. Summarize the location, function, connections, & the gland supplied by otic ganglion 15. Describe the 4 muscles of mastication (location, function and nerve supply) Practical 1. Distinguish the superior, lateral, & posterior views of skull major bones seen in each 2. Recognize main sutures and landmarks seen in each of above views 3. Label the pterion region on skull and acknowledge the artery deep to it 4. Name the parts forming the mandible bone and identify its major landmarks 5. Locate the temporal and infratemporal fossae in a skull 6. Mark the layers of scalp 7. Identify the dermatomes of the scalp 8. Discriminate the major vessels supplying the scalp 9. Locate the infratemporal fossa and recognize its bounding bony structures 10. Name and Distinguish the 4 muscles of mastication 11. Recognize the foramen ovale and spinosum 12. Label the vessels and nerves of the temporal fossa 13. Follow the maxillary artery & its branches (middle Meningeal & inferior alveolar) 14. Trace the mandibular, Lingual, auriculotemporal, and Inferior alveolar nerves 15. Identify the otic ganglion 16. Palpate the superficial temporal artery 17. Feel the movement of the head of the mandible
