Frontal view of skull, Face and Parotid region
Curricular Objectives
By the end of this session students are expected to:
Theory
1. Define fascial skeleton and list the bones forming it
2. Describe briefly the main markings of the frontal view of skull
3. Acknowledge the clinical significance of metopic suture
4. Outline the major regions and features of human face
5. Discuss the sensory innervation of the face and relate it to trigeminal neuralgia
6. Outline the course and main branches of facial artery
7. Describe the venous drainage of the face & the deep communications of facial vein
8. Summarize the location, actions and nerve supply of main muscles of face
9. Explain the wrinkles on the face
10. Outline the extracranial course and distribution of facial nerve
11. Discuss the location, structure, fascial capsule and main function of the parotid gland
12. Summarize the sensory and secreto-motor supply of the gland
13. List the important structures that pass in, through & out of gland
14. Describe the course of parotid duct, its termination and function
15. Draw the dangerous zone of the face and explain why it is named so
16. Define lower motor neuron palsy of the facial nerve and list its features
Practical
1. Recognize major bones of facial skeleton
2. Identify the prominent landmarks of frontal view of skull
3. Locate foramina seen in frontal view of skull & name structures that pass through them
4. Mark the cavities related to frontal view of skull
5. Distinguish the main sensory nerves of the face
6. Trace the facial artery along its course from external carotid artery
7. Identify the facial vein and note its relation to facial artery
8. Locate major muscles of facial expressions
9. Discriminate between the orbital and palpebral parts of orbicularis oculi
10. Follow the five terminal branches of facial nerve after exiting the parotid gland
11. Trace the parotid duct along its course
12. Identify the structures in a cross section of parotid gland
13. Recognize the pattern of termination of the retromandibular vein
14. Label the structures and spaces seen in a frontal view of skull radiograph
15. Name the surface markings of human face & Palpate the facial artery and parotid duct
