Muscular Triangle, and visceral compartment Curricular Objectives By the end of this session students are expected to be able to: Theory 1. Discuss the formation, course and termination of anterior jugular vein 2. Review the extension of the pre-tracheal fascia 3. Outline the boundaries, roof, floor and content of muscular triangle 4. Compare the position of the 4 infra-hyoid muscles & their nerve supply. 5. Describe the thyroid gland (location, parts, and function) 6. Outline important relations of the thyroid gland 7. Summarize blood supply and venous drainage of the thyroid gland 8. Relate the external & recurrent laryngeal nerves to arteries supplying the gland. 9. Explain why an enlarged thyroid gland move with swallowing 10. Review the layers encountered during surgery to uncovering the thyroid gland 11. Define the thyroglossal cyst and explain its development 12. Describe the parathyroid glands (location, shape, and function) 13. Acknowledge the constant position of the superior parathyroid and the variable position of the inferior parathyroid 14. Describe the trachea (structure, location and important relations) 15. Define tracheostomy and List the structures encountered during the procedure 16. Outline the structure, location and important relations of esophagus Practical 1. Distinguish the boundary of muscular triangle 2. Identify the four strap muscles of the neck 3. Recognize the thyroid gland and its parts (lobes/isthmus/pyramidal lobe) 4. Locate the parathyroid glands 5. Trace the superior and inferior thyroid arteries and the related nerves 6. Discriminate the course of superior and inferior (recurrent) laryngeal nerves 7. Identify the trachea and esophagus 8. Distinguish the thyroid gland and its related structures in a cross section 9. Palpate the thyroid gland feeling its normal consistency 10. Palpate the thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage 11. Follow the trachea from its onset till bifurcation 12.
