Submental & Submandibular triangles

Objectives
By the end of this lab students are expected to be able to
1. Describe the boundaries, roof, floor and content of the sub mental triangle
2. Discuss the area drained by sub mental lymph nodes
3. Describe the boundaries, roof, floor and content of the sub mandibular triangle
4. Discuss the relations of the submandibular salivary gland


Question:
An enlarged lymph node just below the chin may indicate one or more of the followings:

a. a molar abscess
b. tumor of the posterior one third of the tongue
c. Boil of the chin
d. carcinoma of the anterior part of the floor of the mouth
e. incisor teeth can be excluded as a cause

Check List

A- Submental triangle

Boundaries:
• Midline
• Digastric muscle (anterior belly)
• Hyoid bone

Floor: Mylohyoid Muscle

Roof: Investing layer of deep cervical fascia

Content: Submental lymph nodes, anterior jugular vein







B- Submandibular (digastric) triangle

Boundaries:
• Body of mandible
• Digastric muscle (anterior belly)
• Digastric muscle (posterior belly)

Floor: Mylohyoid and Hyoglossus muscles

Roof: Investing layer of deep cervical fascia (covered by: superficial fascia, Platysma, skin)

Content:
1. Submandibular salivary gland
2. Submandibular lymph nodes
3. Facial artery
4. Facial vein
