This form is commonly used in many types of research. It is used along with the research purpose as a supporting way to explain what the research is about. Some researchers state the research problem as a single question; others break it down into a number of questions to ease its investigation and to evaluate the research progress and the research outcome. Questions can take the form of yes/no questions or WH questions and sometimes both forms are used depending on the nature of the problem being investigated.
Example:
The present study tests the possibility of applying vocabulary memorization strategies to poetry. In other words, the study will attempt to answer the following question:
Is it possible to apply vocabulary memorization strategies to poetry?
Nevertheless, the questions have to be arranged chronologically and coherently. i.e., the questions that are basic or trigger other questions should be put first and those that are dependent on answers to other questions should be put later.
Example:
The present paper investigates the relationship between achievement in L1 and the speed of L2 acquisition. It attempts to answer the following questions:
a. Does achievement in L1 affect L2 acquisition rate?
b. If there is a relationship between L1 achievement and L2 acquisition rate, what is the nature of this relationship?
c. Which aspects of L2 are affected more by L1 achievement?
d. Can such a relationship be used for predicting L2 acquisition?
