The couplet may be closed if the sense and syntax are complete within the metrical unit, or open if the couplet is itself a part of a longer unit. Epic: a long poem, typically one derived from ancient oral tradition, narrating the deeds and adventures of heroic or legendary figures or the past history of a nation. Free Verse: poetry that does not rhyme or have a regular rhythm. Haiku: a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines traditionally evoking images of the natural world. Limerick: a humorous five-line poem with a rhyme scheme aabba. Narrative poetry: it is a form of poetry that tells a story, often making the voices of a narrator and characters as well; the entire story is usually written in metered verse. Ode: a lyric poem, typically one in the form of an address to a particular subject, written in varied or irregular metre. Song: a short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung. Sonnet Technically the sonnet is easy to identify: fourteen lines divided (usually) by rhyme and argument into units of eight lines (octave) and six (sestet).
