ing form

The continuous tenses are verb phrases composed of forms of the auxiliary be+ the present participle (ing-form) of principal verb.

e.g

I am studying

He was playing.

The present participle of both regular and irregular verbs is formed by adding –ing to the bare infinitive of the verb.

e.g

read            reading                         see                  seeing

ask              asking                           buy                  buying.

      The following changes in spelling occur when adding –ing to the verb;
