Sonnet 116: Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand ring bark,
Whose worth s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love s not Time s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me prov d,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov d.

Sonnet: A lyric poem consisting of a single stanza of fourteen iambic pentameter lines linked by an intricate rhyme scheme. There are two major patterns of rhyme in sonnets written in the English language:
1. The Italian or Petrarchan sonnet
2. Shakespearean sonnet


Shakespearean Sonnet: This sonnet falls into three quatrains and a concluding couplet: abab cdcd efef gg.

Rhyme Scheme: Writing the end rhyme of a poem in one line. e.g. abab cdcd efef gg.

Imagery: The word is used, more narrowly, to signify only specific descriptions of visible objects and scenes, especially if the description is vivid and particularized,

Personification: either an inanimate object or an abstract concept is spoken of as though it were endowed with life or with human attributes or feelings.

Couplet: A stanza of two lines.

Quatrain: A stanza of four lines.
