Position of Adverbs

  The adverb of degree is placed before the adjective, the adverb or the main verb it is used  to modify;

   e.g.

   It was very hot.

              (degree) adj

He speaks English quite well

                               (degree) (adv)

I quite agree with you.

She was rather disappointed.

It was too foggy to see the road ahead.

Enough comes after the adjective or the adverb it modifies.

e.g

He worked hard enough to succeed.

The room isn t large enough.

The meaning of certain adverbs of degree;

"Fairly and Rather"

   Both of these adverbs are used to mean "to moderate degree " the difference between the two is that fairly is used when the idea is positive or pleasant.

e.g

Some students said the exam was fairly easy, while others said it was rather difficult.

You look rather tired this morning.

We had a fairly pleasant evening.

Quite

 "Quite" has two meanings;

1.    It means "completely" with a word or phrase which can express the idea of completeness.

         e.g

         full, empty, right, correct, sure, certain,

  I am quite certain.

  Are you quite finished?

  Your answers are quite correct.

  That s quite enough, thank you.

2.    It means "up to certain point / more or less" with other adjective / adverb . In this case "quite" has a weakening effect.

         e.g

         It has become quite cold (a little less than cold.)

         She s quite pretty, isn t she?(a little less than pretty.)

Much

      As an adverb of degree "much" is used with the comparatives.

     e.g

      He is much better today.

      This is much more than I bought .

      You will work much faster, if you work alone.

     "Much" usually takes "very" in the affirmative, but does not

       need it in the negative.

        e.g

         Your help is very much appreciated.

         Thank you very much indeed.

         I d very much like to see it.

         I don t think much about it.

         He does n t swim much.
