Predicative use
Descriptive adjectives can be placed after be and the linking verbs such as seem , appear , become , etc. This is called the "predicative" use of adjectives.
e.g.
The view is beautiful .
The roon seemed convenient.
She looks charming .
The weather is growing hot .
And is placed between the last two adjectives , I any .
e.g.
it was hot and dusty .
Exercise
Combine the following sentences using the proper degree of comparison . i.e. , positive , comparative , or superlative .
1. Layla is 5 feet tall . Selma is 5 feet tall , too.
2. I have 15 dinars . My brother has 25 dinars .
3. Zeki is 10 years old . Yousife is 12 years old . Ali is 15 years old .
4. Theis is a family of fat people . The father weighs 130 kilos . The mother weighs 110 kilos . The son weighs 100 kilos .
5. Joun?s mark in history is 80 . His sister?s is 75 .
6. There are 20 trees in our garden . There are 10 trees in your garden , too .
Adjectives of quality used as nouns
Some adjectives of quality , namely those describing human character or condition can be used as nouns , if they are preceded by the . such nouns will denote a class of persons and should be used in ageneral sense only . Thus they have a plural meaning and are followed by plural verbs . A single person is referred to only if a noun is added after the adjective .
e.g.
The brave are respected . (= all brave people ) .
Robin Hood gave to the poor what he stole from the rich .
The dead do not talk .
but: I gave the poor beggar some money
