The language laboratory should not be thought of as a possible substitute for the teacher. It can only assist the teacher by; a) enabling the students to compare their performance with a model on the tape, b) enabling the students to hear recordings of native speakers , and c) freeing the teachers from the drudgery of repetition.

1. Items in the syllabus are not presented in isolation but in pairs that can be constructed . It has been found that an item becomes more meaningful when constructed with another, especially if the difference is minimized ; hence the use of minimal pairs in phonology, morphology and syntax.

The idea of minimal pairs has been made prominent by the concept of distinctive features. As a teaching device , it is really successful since it draws the learner s attention sharply to one point of difference at a time. Such a difference is clear-cut and also manageable.

2. Language teaching cannot be accurate and efficient
