The Factors;
The factors that gave rise to the structural approach in language teaching can be stated as follows;
1. The development of linguistics as independent science. The discovery of the concept of the phoneme and the establishment of the concept of distinctive features gave rise to a flow of literature on language and language processes.
Those ideas have brought about a complete change in the views on language and the nature of language communication.
2. The second factor is the development of psycholinguistics, particularly the studies on the nature of bilingualism and interference. Like linguistic studies , psychological studies related to language learning have shed much light on the nature of second language learning.
3. As a result of World War 11 and the growth in telecommunication , there has been a need for a more efficient and more " scientific" method of language teaching. This has led to relatively greater interest in methodology and in language learning psychology, as a result of which, attention has been focused on linguistic analysis and on the selection , grading and presentation of teaching materials.
