Use of Comparison

 

 

1.     The comparative degree is used for the comparison of two things / persons or groups ( of things / persons ) that are different with regard to adjective . The comparative form is usually followed by than.

 

e.g.

 

Zeki is 10 years old .

 

Yousif is 14 years old .

 

Yousif is older than zeki .

 

Zeki is younger than yousif .

 

This chair is more comfortable than that .

 

The trees in our garden are taller than the ones in yours .

 

There is less water in this jug than (there is ) in that .

 

Our school team is better than theirs .

 

He is shorter than any other boy in the class .

 

 

2.     The superlative degree is used for the comparison of three or more things / persons or groups ( of things / persons ) that are different with regard to the adjective . The superlative form is usually preceded by the .

 

e.g.

 

Our house is the largest in the neighborhood .

 

It means larger than any other house …..

 

Everest is the highest mountain in the world

 

These are the most beautiful flowers I have ever seen .

 

3.     The positive form of the adjective is used for comparison in two ways :

 

a.      to show similarity between two persons / things or groups (of persons /things) . this is done by using the structure :

 

as + positive adj. + as (in the affirmative).

 

e.g.

 

The child is as quite as a mouse.

 

He is as proud as a peacock .

 

Oil is as valuable as gold .

 

She looks as fresh as daisy .

 

 

b.     To show that two persons /things or groups (of persons /things ) are different with regard to the adjective . This is done by using the structure in (32 ?????) above in the negative .

 

The first as may also be changed into so .

 

             e.g.

 

   His marks are not as / so high as he hoped .

 

   The hotel was not as / so comfortable as we expected .

 

   The test was not as / so easy as the students desired .

 

    More uses of the comparative degree

 

a.      The following pattern is used to show that the degree o one quality depends upon the degree of another .

 

( The  +  comparative (1)  +  subject  +  verb  +  the +  comparative (2)  +  subject  +  verb ) .

 

e.g.

 

The better your work is , the more money you will get .

 

The easier the questions are , the higher marks the students will get .

 

The more complicated the machine is , the more difficult it becomes to repair .

 

b.     The comparatives are usually joined by and to show gradual increase or decrease .

 

e.g.

 

She is getting prettier and prettier .

 

The horse is becoming more and more difficult to handle .

 

The matter is growing less and less important .
