Asking the Way and Giving Directions
Some Vocabulary and expressions for Asking for the Way and Giving Directions
In this lecture you will learn how to ask for the way and how to give directions for someone. To do this you need to learn a number of vocabularies that are common in this regard. The following list includes some of these vocabulary:
- It is on the left
- It is on the right
- It is straight on
- Opposite
- Near
- Next to
- Between
- At the end of …. (e.g. Oxford Street)
- On the corner of … (e.g. James road)
- At the end of … (e.g. Stanley Street)
- Behind the … (e.g. Petrol station)
- In front of the …. (e.g. Mall)
- Just around the corner for here
There also some expressions that are useful to be learned to be able to give directions, the following table includes some of them:

• Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the bus station.
• Excuse me, do you know where the post office.
• I m sorry, I don t know
• Sorry, I m not from around here
• I m looking for this address
• Are we on the right way for Liverpool
• Do you have a map?
• Can you show me on the map?
- It s this way
- It s that way
- You re going the wrong way
- You re going in the wrong direction
- Take this road
- Go down there
- Take the first on the left
- Take the second on the right
- Turn right at the crossroads
- Continue straight ahead for about a mile
- Continue past the fire station
- You ll pass a supermarket on your left
- It ll be on your left/right
- It ll be straight ahead of you ? Follow the signs for Birmingham
? Continue straight on past some traffic lights at the next set of traffic lights, turn left.
? Go over the roundabout take the second exit at the roundabout turn right at the T-junction
? Go under the bridge
? Go over the bridge.
? You will cross some railway lines

Some examples:
- Excuse me sir. Is there a bank around here?
Yes, there is one right across the street next to Library
- Can you give me directions to the petrol station? Of course I will, just follow this road until you come to the main road. Turn right and then continue for about 100 metres. You will see the petrol station on the left.
- Can you tell me how to get to the London Bridge? Am sorry I can t help as am not from around here.
- Where s the nearest bus station? It s on the corner of Oxford Street and Mayfair Lane. Next to the train station.
- How do you get to the Mall? You have to go straight along this road for about 200 metres. Turn right when you see Apple Street. Carry on straight ahead till you see a Tesco supermarket. The Mall is opposite the supermarket.
- Is there a bank near here? Yes, there is one in Orange Street. Orang Street is the third road on your right.
- Excuse me sir. Could you please tell me where I can find the nearest chemist? Yes, there is one next to the Bakery. Go back the way you come. Turn right after you go past the bank and there is one on your left next to the hospital.
