Final Consonant Sequence : Consonant + /?/
· The consonants /t/ , /d/, /n/ and /l/ are followed by / ?/ in words like eighth /eit?/ , breadth /bred?/, tenth /ten?/ and health /hel?/.
· Normally /t/ , /d/ , /n/ and /l/ are made with the tongue tip on the alveolar ridge, but when followed by / ?/ they are made with the tongue tip touching the back of the upper teeth.
· In words like fifth /fif?/ and length /len??/ the tongue tip is placed in position for /?/ during the previous consonant , so that again there is no gap between them. There are only few words like these, e.g. width /wid?/ , hundredth /h^ndr?d?/ , ninth /nain?/ , thirteenth / ??:ti:n?/ , etc. and the words wealth /wel?/ and strength /stre??/.
· All these words may have the plural /s/ added to them giving eigth /eit?s/, breadths /bred?s/ , etc.
