Class: Third-Year Class, Morning Studies
Academic Year: 2018-2019
Hours: As Scheduled

Objectives:
Literature is human experience transmitted from one generation to another either orally or in written form. There is no literature superior or inferior to another. There are, however, good works of literature and there are less good ones, not to say bad.
The objective of this course is to enable second-year students by its end to read a literary work critically and enjoy it aesthetically, as far as possible, through interaction with the literary text, class participation, Q & A, responses, and other activities.

Supplementary Textbooks:
• Duncan Wu (ed.) Victorian Poetry. London and NY: Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2002.
• Cuddon, J. A. Penguin Dictionary of Literary Terms and Literary Theory. London: Penguin Books, 1998.
• Baldick, Chris. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms. Oxford: OUP, 2001.

References:
The students are supposed to check the department library for supplementary references as well as the World Wide Web for more information on the texts studied, literary terms, and other related information.

Daily Preparation and Assignments:
Students are expected to:
1. Read the selected text to be discussed in class, find out the meaning of the difficult words, and attempt their own meaning of the text;
2. Respond to questions and actively participate in class discussions;
3. Present a selected text in class and compare to another;
Note: There might be other assignments to be distributed whenever there is need to.

Exams:
Students are to sit TWO monthly exams. No student is exempted from attending an exam, FOR ANY REASON. Failing to attend an exam will result in the student losing the marks allocated.
Quizzes are to be expected anytime.
