A paragraph is a collection of sentences, in a similar way an essay is a collection of paragraphs. Just like each sentence in a paragraph has a particular role or job, each paragraph in an essay also has a particular role. A paragraph must be well organised
and so must an essay.

However, an essay provides much more information than a paragraph. It allows the writer to provide much more detail. Each major supporting detail is turned into a main point and can be developed into a paragraph. Therefore many more examples, explanations and details can be included.
A descriptive paragraph attempts to create a visual picture for the reader. It provides a point of view of how something looks, smells, sounds, tastes etc.

A descriptive paragraph will:

• Gives impressions, ideas or feelings about something
• Paints a picture for the reader using language

• Uses sensory words linked to sight, sound, touch, taste or smell

• Does not give a definition

Descriptive essays are generally follow one of two organisational patterns: time or space. For example a descriptive is that is organised around time might describe a typical day or week. However, this is different than a narrative which tends to focus on a specific story or event. A descriptive essay that is organised according to space may describe a building or place.
