Phonology -As distinct from phonetics, which studies the physical side of sounds, ‘phonology’ concerns itself with the study of the abstract side of the sounds of a particular language. In other words, phonology studies phonemes and how they function in the language. That is, it studies the phonemic system of a particular language. As such, it deals with , for example, phoneme sequences and syllable structure. Hence, it identifies the restrictions on the sequences of phonemes that are used and what may constitute a syllable as a bigger unit in size than the phoneme. -Generally speaking, phonology is of two type the first of which is’ Segmental phonology’ which is concerned with the componential features of the phoneme, like voicing, point of articulation, and manner of articulation ,while the second one is ‘ Suprasegmental phonology’ which deals with the accompanying or the superimposed features of the sounds. Examples of those features are stress, tone , and intonation. These examples show sound contrasts that extend over several segments( phonemes), and such contrasts are called ‘ suprasegmentals.
