2. Punctuation marks

Punctuation marks are certain symbols and signs used in writing to perform a number of functions all of which are related to the prosodic features in speech. Punctuation marks are usually classified into two types: end punctuation marks and non-end punctuation marks.

2.1. End Punctuation marks

End Punctuation marks are used to signal the end of a sentence. In this type we three marks  (the full-stop, the question mark, and the exclamatory mark) which can be illustrated as follows:

2.1.1. The full-stop (period)

The full-stop is used in composition much more frequently than the other two end punctuation marks because it is used after statements. The full stop, of course has other uses like after abbreviations as in (Mr., Dr., M. Sc. …etc.).

2.1.2. The question mark

The question mark is mainly used after direct questions as in:

                Who is your favourite playwright?

The question mark should not be used in indirect question as in:

                * I asked him where he bought his shirt from? (wrong)

I asked him where he bought his shirt from. (correct)

I asked him: “Where did you buy your shirt from?” (correct)

The question mark is sometimes used to indicate doubt as in:

Sidney Morgan (1898? – 1972) was little known until after his death.

2.1.3. The exclamatory mark

The exclamatory mark is used after exclamatory sentences and exclamations (i. e.) sentences expressing astonishment, strong feeling, surprise,…etc. as in:

What a marvelous poet and playwright Shakespeare was!

You are still here! The plane is about to set off.
