Aim of this section:
u how to get an overview of a text before reading it intensively.
u to increase students reading speed by practising strategies for dealing
with unknown words in a text.
Predicting content
Predicting a text content:
u gives an idea what the text is about.
u helps comprehension.
How to predict a text content?
u Look at the title.
u Look at any pictures.
u Ask some questions (Who? Where? Why? When? What?) to predict
content & focus on the information you need.
To guess the meaning from the context;
u look at the words & sentences around the unknown word.
u identify the part of speech.
u use your knowledge of the world (what you already know about the
situation).
u think about whether the word has a generally negative or positive
meaning.
u replace the unknown word with another word with a similar meaning and
check that it makes sense in the sentence.
Part of speech
u one of the classes into which words are divided according to their grammar, such as noun, verb,
adjective, etc.
u In English the main parts of speech are:
1. Noun (n.), e.g. book, door, man
2. Pronoun (pro.), e.g. he, she, it
3. Adjective.(adj), e.g. happy, sad, lovely
4. Determiner (deter), e.g. this, that, those, these, the, all, both
5. Verb (v.), e.g. play, read, study
6. Adverb (adv), e.g. quickly, slowly, often
7. Preposition (prep), e.g. in, on, at, from
8. Conjunction (conj), e.g. although, however, but, and
9. Interjection (intr), e.g. ah!, dear me!, oh! Ow!
