It has three main functions:
1- Generates NADPH (reducing equivalent) for:
biosynthetic/anabolic pathways such as fatty acid and steroid hormone synthesis.
Protection against oxidants (see later)
2- Production of C5 ribose sugar for biosynthesis of nucleosides and nucleic acids. ????? DNA & RNA synthesis
3- Re- production of glucose and other Hexoses from pentose sugar.


It has three main functions:
